United States- International air passenger traffic up 7 percent

Washington : International air traffic to/from the U.S. totaled 50.4 million passengers through March 2016, a seven percent increase over the March 2015 year-to-date period according to NTTO of US Department of Commerce.

U.S. citizen travel (22.8 million) was up 11 percent and composed 45 percent of all air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (27.7 million) increased by four percent with market share at 55 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 25.3 million passengers, up four percent, their share dropping to 50 percent. Foreign flags carried 25.1 million passengers, up 10 percent from the same period in 2015.

Overseasair traffic accounted for 36.0 million passengers, 71 percent of all international, and grew by eight percent.

U.S. citizen travel (16.1 million) was up nine percent and composed 45 percent of overseas air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (19.9 million) increased by seven percent resulting in their market share at 55 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 17.2 million passengers, up four percent, their share dropping to 48 percent. Foreign flags carried 18.7 million passengers, up 12 percent from March 2015 YTD.

Estimated capacity (346,398 seats) on inbound flights from PRC was up 21 percent year-over-year. Overall inbound passenger growth was 22.6 percent passenger growth.Â

Chinese carriers increased average weekly frequencies from 103 to 146, up 42 percent.

U.S. carriers increased average weekly frequencies from 117 to 132, up 13 percent.

The Gulf carrier passenger share was 3.0% of all international passenger traffic to/from the U.S., up from 2.6% in first quarter of 2015. Over 828,000 passengers were inbound to the U.S. of which 436,000 were foreign national travelers.

Norwegian Air Services (DY) carried 343,000 passengers in Q1, 0.7 percent of all air traffic.

North American markets accounted for 29 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.

Mexicoair traffic accounted for 7.4 million passengers, 15 percent of all international traffic, and was up 12 percent.

U.S. citizen travel (5.1 million) increased 16 percent and composed 68 percent of all air traffic. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (2.3 million) transiting through Mexico, increased by four percent, with market share at 32 percent.

U.S. flags carried 5.6 million passengers, up 11 percent from last year, and their share at 75 percent. Foreign flags carried 1.8 million passengers, up 13 percent increasing share to 25 percent.

Canadianair traffic accounted for 7.1 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, and decreased by one percent.

U.S. citizen travel (1.6 million) increased 17 percent and composed 23 percent of air traffic. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (5.4 million), decreased by five percent.

U.S. flags carried 2.5 million passengers, down seven percent from last year, and their share declined to 35 percent. Foreign flags carried 4.6 million passengers, up three percent.
