Nepal Mountaineering celebrates 44th anniversary

Kathmandu : Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) celebrated its 44th anniversary focusing on development of mountain tourism in the country.

Addressing a programme marking the 44th anniversary of NMA) here , Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA ) Maheshwor Neupane highlighted on different activities to promote mountaineering and Nepal Himalayas.

Regarding the collection of entrance fee and royalty by some rural municipalities, he urged the local bodies to stop collection of fees from the tourists visiting rural parts of Nepal.

Neupane suggested NMA to be transparent in managing the expenses and fees collected from  climbing permits.

Director General of the Department of Tourism Dinesh Bhattarai urged the tourism entrepreneurs to upgrade the services and the facilities to the tourists.

NMA First Vice President Deebas Bikram Shah shed light on activities of the association in developing adventure tourism in Nepal.

On the occasion, winners of the various awards initiated by the association were announced.

Mingma Sherpa has been named the winner of Late Kumar Khadga Bikram Shah Memorial Adventure Tourism Award for being the first Nepali to climb 14 mountains above 8000m.

Buddhi Narayan Shrestha has been named the winner of the Dr. Harka Gurung Mountaineering Award and journalist Ballav Mani Dahal, the winner of the Late Dawa Norbu Tourism Journalism Award.

Similarly, instructors and participants of the 38th Basic Mountaineering Training conducted in Kathmandu and Manang were honoured with certificates.

On the occasion, President of NMA Santa Bir Lama requested the ministry to renew the authority to issue climbing permit.

The Government of Nepal authorized NMA to issue permits for 18 peaks between 5,587 meters to 6,654 meters in the Manang, Annapurna, Langtang and Khumbu region in 1978.

Likewise , the government authorized the association to issue permits for another 15 climbing peaks in 2002.

NMA , member of Union of International Alpine Association (UIAA), Union of Asian Alpine Association (UAAA) and International Federation of Sports Climbing (IFSC), was established on November 1 , 2073.
