Coronavirus infected cases exceed 1.79 million , US tops the list

More than 1.79 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 109,312 have died, according to John Hopkins University tally as reported on Sunday (April 12). The number of recovered cases is said to be 409,446.
The United States, with around 20,580 COVID-19 deaths, topped the list for both fatalities and numbers of declared cases of coronavirus pandemic. More than 533,000 people are infected in USA as of Sunday.
Italy, the hardest-hit country in Europe, has recorded more than 19,000 confirmed virus deaths-second only to the US, which has a population five times its size.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is making good progress in his recovery from COVID-19, as his health minister said the peak of the outbreak in Britain had not yet been reached.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to extend a nationwide lockdown.
China has largely brought its domestic outbreak under control, but it faces a fresh battle against imported cases from overseas, mostly Chinese nationals returning home.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for citizens across Japan to avoid spots like bars and restaurants to be safe from virus .
The World Bank said South Asia is on course for its worst economic performance in 40 years because of coronavirus – with decades of progress against poverty at risk.
