European Commission team assessed safety status of Nepali airlines

Kathmandu: A six- member European Aviation Safety Assessment Mission has returned to Brussels after assessing Nepal’s civil aviation safety. The team conducted on- site inspection and evaluated the capacity and technical aspects of the major airlines companies of Nepal.
The team monitored the safety status of six airlines – Nepal Airlines, Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, Sita Airlines, Tara Airlines, Shree airlines and Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
The European Commission banned Nepal-based airline companies from flying into or within the European Union due to a high number of air accidents in the country and the CAAN’s inability to improve air safety situation here on December 5, 2013.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) hopes that the European Union’s ban on Nepali airlines in the skies of EU member countries would be lifted soon.The report on Nepal’s aviation safety is likely to be tabled in a meeting to be held in Brussels in the last week of March , 2014.
The current EU safety list covers 21 countries and some 295 airlines — Afghanistan, Angola, Benin, Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Mozambique, Nepal, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, Sudan, Swaziland and Zambia.
There are some exemptions in the listed countries and some airlines are also allowed into the EU but under strict conditions.
The EU Air Safety Committee consists of aviation safety experts from the Commission, from each of the 28 Member States of the Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The 28 member states of European Commission ( EC ) are – Belgium , Bulgaria , Czech Republic , Denmark , Germany , Estonia , Greece , Spain ,France ,Croatia, Ireland , Italy , Cyprus , Latvia ,Lithuania ,Luxembourg , Hungary , Malta , Netherlands , Austria , Poland , Portugal ,Romania ,Slovenia , Slovakia, Finland, Sweden and United Kingdom.
