Kathmandu: Tourism entrepreneurs have stressed on initiatives to strengthen tourism cooperation between Nepal and Jilong County of Tibet Autonomous Region of People’s Republic of China.

A six member delegation led by President of Nepal Tourism Development Entrepreneurs Association (NTDEA) Nirajan Tiwari visited Jilong County ( Keirong ) on May 21-23 to explore possibilities of developing tourism between the two countries.

Director of the Administrative Committee of Jilong Port Mr. Dachun welcomed the delegation at Keirung.

The Nepali entrepreneurs also had cordial meeting with Mr. Pu Qiong , Director General ,  Culture and Tourism Bureau  of Jilong County .

Nepali tourism entrepreneurs discussed on different issues of tourism promotion and bilateral cooperation between Nepal And Jilong County during their visit to Kerung.

“The roads, transport system and other amenities in the jilong County are well managed, whereas the roads and infrastructures in the Nepali side need to be improved, “said Nirajan Tiwari, President of NTDEA and Nimi Tours and Travels.

Located in the Shigatse Prefecture in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, Jilong has a long and rich history with the surrounding Tibetan and Nepali areas.

Jilong County was one of the main trade routes between Nepal and Tibet until the mid-20th century.

The Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border crossing, opened in December 2014, is the only point of bilateral trade between Nepal and China after the earthquake in April 2015 severely damaged the Tatopani border and Kodari Highway linking to China.

The Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border was upgraded as an international crossing point allowing citizens from other countries besides Nepalis and Chinese to travel across the border in August 2017.

Hundreds of tourists visit Mansarovar and other areas entering from Rasuwagadi-Kerung border point, which is located 122 km north of Kathmandu. The distance from Rasuwagadhi to Kerung is 35 kilometers.

Tatopani checkpoint would resume from next week after China reconstructed damaged Friendship bridge and Kodari highway.

China has reiterated its commitment to build the Kerung – Kathmandu railway despite the Trans-Himalayan railway project being geographically challenging and most expensive.

The China- Nepal cross border railway was included in the joint communiqué of the second International Belt and Road Forum held in Beijing recently.
