International Everest Day celebrated, nine climbers honored

Kathmandu: Nepal celebrated Everest Day today organizing a series of programs in different parts of the country.
Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit of world’s highest mountain on 29 May, 1953. Nepal observes International Sagarmatha ( Mt. Everest) Day each year to commemorate the historic day.
On the occasion of 9th International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day, Prime Minister K P Oli offered bouquets at the statues of Tenzing Sherpa and Edmund Hillary at a program held at NTB premises.
Prime Minister Oli felicitated nine Sherpa guides who fixed ropes to the summit of Mt. Everest this spring season.The courageous climbers – Pasang Tenzing Sherpa , Ang Pemba Sherpa ,Gyalzen Dorji Sherpa,Pasang Dorjee Sherpa, Ngima Tshiri Sherpa, Mingma Chhiri Sherpa , Shera Geljen Sherpa , Lhakpa Chhring Sherpa and Mingma Thindu Sherpa were honored along with cash award of Rs. 50,000 per climber managed by Nepal Mountaineering Association.
They completed the very difficult task of rope fixation putting their lives in risk and their achievement is reflected in the successful ascent of Everest by more than 400 climbers in the spring season of this year according to member secretary for International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day Main Organizing Committee and President of Nepal Mountaineering Association Ang Tshering Sherpa.
Similarly, President of Expedition Operator Association Damber Parajuli, Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, Ang Janbu Sherpa, Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa and Russel Brice were honored for successfully coordinating the rope fixing Sherpa team.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister released first day cancellation of stamp published to mark International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day.
On behalf of Nepali Mt. Everest Summiteers, Pasang Tenzing Sherpa urged the Nepal government to ensure retirement plan and policy to the Sherpa including financial support to the disabled climbers . Everest summiteer Isaih Paul Janzen from USA shared his experience on climbing Mt. Everest.
Prime minister Oli , Chairman for International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day Main Organizing Committee and Secretary for Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prem Kumar Rai , NTB CEO Deepak Raj Joshi and President of Nepal Mountaineering Association Ang Tshering Sherpa shed light on importance of International Everest Day and prospects of developing mountain tourism in Nepal.
