    Maldives welcomed 1.31 million tourists in 2021

    South Asian country – Maldives welcomed a total of 1,312,706 tourists in 2021. Total arrivals to the Maldives crossed 1.31 million with an increase of over 138 per cent compared with that of 2020 and a drop of 22.5 per cent compared with that of 2019.

    Total tourist arrivals in Maldives in 2019 was 1,702,887 and 555, 494 in 2020.

    The top 10 markets during January – December 2021 were India, Russia, Germany, United Kingdom, U.S.A, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Ukraine, France and Italy, according to the Ministry of Tourism of Maldives.

    Maldives is connected with major destinations of the world through different 29 airlines.

     “As recovery continues for the Maldives from the COVID-19 situation, tourist arrivals to the Maldives bounce back. The one-million arrival target was reached in October 2021.”

    Maldives registered a new record for total number of tourist arrivals on a single day on 26th December, since the reopening of the borders with 7,098 arrivals and arrivals target of 1.3 million was reached on 27th December.

    Daily average arrival of the tourists in 2021 was 3,616 and duration of stay 8.7 days.

    While major markets such as Russia and India made full recovery with strong positive growth rates, new markets emerged from the European region and the Middle East. The U.K market is recovering fast and, has become the 4th largest market to the Maldives, the Ministry said.

    Meanwhile, Maldives has introduced Homestay Tourism this year and the project is set to be launched in M. Dhiggaru, an island famous for their Rihaakuru .
