Myanmar targets 5 million tourists with e-visa

Yangon : Myanmar launched an online visa application  promising an end to painful waits for permits to visit the once secretive nation as it tries to lure five million tourists a year by 2015.

The e-visa is open to tourists from 41 countries, from Singapore, China, Japan and North Korea to the United States and Britain, Minister of Immigration and Population Khin Yi told reporters. The website is at www.evisa.moip.gov.mm.

The entry permit will cost US$50 (S$62.52) and be valid for 28 days to those arriving at Yangon’s international airport, said Mr Yi, adding it will take five days to process.

“This is a special moment for our country… as the process improves, we will extend it – more countries will be added in the list,” he added.

Two years in the making, the scheme has cost impoverished Myanmar US$17 million but is a step towards wider e-government in a country whose technology lags its regional neighbours after decades of junta rule which stifled investment and the economy.

During military rule tourists arrived in a trickle due to strict vetting by the regime or because they were deterred by international sanctions, which have since mainly been rolled back.

But since Myanmar embarked on democratic reforms in 2011, tourists have started making a beeline for the country – long seen as an undiscovered frontier.

Two million overseas visitors arrived last year, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, with more expected this year.

The Myanmar embassy in regional hub Bangkok is deluged daily with visa requests, leading to hours-long queues.

Drawn by Myanmar’s famous temples, culture and spectacular scenery, visitors are also confronted by expensive or sub-standard hotels and a limited tourist infrastructure.

The country wants to build up the lucrative tourism market, with a new airport planned to cope the surging number of arrivals in Yangon.

Myanmar is targeting five million tourists next year with the e-visa a key part of the strategy, the minister said, adding the system has been backed-up to survive the electrical faults and frequent blackouts that afflict the country,AFP reports.

According to Xinhua news quoting hotels and tourist authorities, the number of tourist arrivals in Myanmar reached 1.6 million in the first seven months of this year, up 43 percent from the same period of last year.

Since taking office by the civilian government in 2011, tourist arrivals in Myanmar remarkably grew from 1.06 million in 2012 to 2. 04 million in 2013 and it targets 3 million tourists in 2015 and over 7 million by 2020 under the 2013-2020 Myanmar main tourist project.

Of the foreign visitors, those from Asia accounted for 70 percent with others from Europe, America, Africa and the Middle East also growing.

Myanmar’s tourist development is also highlighted by the visit of foreign tourists to Myanmar’s world-known Shwedagon Pagoda and the number of visitors to the pagoda reached 245,586 in the first half of 2014, up 30,000 from the same period of last year.

Foreign exchange earnings through tourist increased from 534 million U.S. dollars in 2012 to 926 million U.S. dollars in 2013 and it is projected to reach over one billion U.S. dollars in 2014.

The World Travel and Tourism Council said Myanmar’s hotels and tourist sector currently contributes 3.7 percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) , estimating that the percentage could reach 9.5 by the end of 2014.- AFP/ Xinhua
