    COVID-19

World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that “COVID-19” will now be the official name of the deadly virus from China, saying the disease represented a very grave threat for the world but there was a realistic chance of stopping it.

According to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.  “CO” stands for “corona”, “VI” for “virus” and “D” for “disease”, while “19” was for the year, as the outbreak was first identified on December 31, 2019.

The WHO chief said the name had been chosen to avoid references to a specific geographical location, animal species or group of people in line with international recommendations for naming aimed at preventing stigmatization.

“The novel coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP) is a challenge for all human beings, which needs to be tackled jointly by the international community. By taking strong measures, China is not just acting for the sake of its own people, but for people across the world. In this battle against the invisible enemy, we are working around the clock to allow time for global preparedness, fighting on the front lines to contain the virus and setting a new standard for epidemic response, “ China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

China’s Hubei Province, center of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, reported 14,840 new confirmed cases and 242 new deaths on February 12. It brought the total confirmed cases in the province to 48,206. The province had a total of 1,310 deaths as of Feb. 12.
