Nepal marked International Everest Day

Kathmandu: Nepal marked the 5th International Mt. Everest Day 2012 amidst various programmes across the country on May 29.The government officials and mountaineers stressed the need to manage and preserve the Himalayas.
Everest summitteer Dawa Steven Sherpa urged the government to develop new routes for Mt Everest expeditions and review its existing policies regarding the liasion officers, garbage problem and other issues of the Himalayas.”Nepal’s identity is Everest and so it should be preserved ‘,he said.
On the occasion of the International Mt Everest Day, Nepal Tourism Board in coordination with the Nepal Mountaineering Association, HAN and TAAN felicitated mountaineers from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Iran, Austria, Japan, Germany, Canada, Chile, UK and USA.
Sunar Bahadur Gurung from Larpak of Gorkha district of Nepal was awarded with Tenzing Hillary Award for being the first international Nepali mountain guide. Chuldim Sherpa was felicitated with Pasang Lamu Award. Pradeep Lama was awarded with Pema Doma Sherpa Scholarship award, whereas Dr Hem Sagar Baral and Dr Shastra Dutta Pant were felicitated with Dr Harka Gurung Award.
The Nepal government and Nepal Mountaineering Association started celebrating May 29 as the International Mt Everest (Sagarmatha) Day in memory of the first successful ascent of the highest peak of the world on May 29,1953.
Similarly, Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) unveiled two new trekking trails along with route map and DVD marking 5th International Sagarmatha Day.Minister of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) Post Bahadur Bogati, secretary of MoCTCA and NTB chairperson Ganesh Raj Joshi and officiating CEO of NTB Subash Nirola jointly unveiled the new trails in Taplejung and Lower Manaslu region.
The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) , NEPAL mountaineering Association , Hotel Association Nepal and TAAN jointly organized a rally morning on the occasion of fifth International Mt Everest Day.
