NMA elects new leadership, Santa Bir Lama as new President

Kathmandu, August 6 : A new Central Executive Board of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has been elected under the leadership of Santa Bir Lama .
Mr.Deebas Bikram Shah, Ms. Maya Sherpa, Kul Bahadur Gurung, Tika Ram Gurung and Sudarshan Neupane have been elected as 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, General Secretary , Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
Likewise, Dr. Hari Prasad Shrestha , Ang Chhewang Sherpa , Da Gelji Sherpa , Tulsi Gurung, Pasang Tendi Sherpa , Singhi Lama , Mingmar Sherpa ,Vinaya Shakya and Sanjib Gurung are elected as members in the new executive committee for three years.
Newly elected President Santa Bir Lama garnered 383 votes while his rival Zimba Jangbu Sherpa received 316 votes in the election held here on Saturday.
Among the elected officials, Shah, Ms. Sherpa, , Tika Gurung and Neupane are from Lama panel , whereas general secretary Kul B. Gurung is from Zimba Zangbu Sherpa panel.
Four elected executive members are from Zimba Jangbu Sherpa panel and five are from Santa Bir Lama panel.
This is the first time in NMA history that two panels directly or indirectly backed by political parties fought the election.
Travel and tourism entrepreneurs have stressed on professionalism and non- politicization of the alpine association.
Newly elected President Lama has committed to uplift image of NMA and develop mountain tourism in the country with cooperation of all the stakeholders and organizations.
Nepal government has authorized NMA to collect royalty of 33 peaks in the country.NMA operates Manang Mountaineering School, International Mountain Museum in Pokhara, and International Mountaineers Memorial Park at Kakani .
The association, established in 1973, is affiliated to Union of International Alpinists Association ( UIAA ) and Union of Asian Alpinist Association ( UAAA) .
