No tourists targeted in Thailand political protests

Bangkok: As Thailand prepares for King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday on 5 December 2013 , a big cleaning activity has been arranged today on Ratchadamnoen Avenue in Bangkok’s historic Rattanakosin Island. Officials and protesters are seen helping each other in cleaning the royal boulevard.
According to local media reports, the anti-government protesters will continue their protests after 5 December 2013. Their five main stages remain at the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, Ministry of Finance on Rama VI Road, Government Complex on Chaengwattana Road, Nang Lerng Junction on Nakhonsawan-Phitsanulok Roads and Makkawan Bridge on Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue.
The tourists visiting the kingdom have not been targeted in the ongoing political protests. Despite the protests, most attractions in Bangkok and throughout Thailand are open and operating as per normal.
Tourists are advised to be vigilant and avoid areas where crowds may gather. Tourists are also advised to check travel routes and road traffic situation to avoid getting caught in traffic or they can use other means of transportation to getting around in Bangkok, including BTS Skytrain, MRT Subway, Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link’s Express and City Lines, and water-transport.
Mr. Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said, the street tensions have eased since protestors and the police have come to a peaceful understanding. Now the nation will unite in celebration of His Majesty the King’s Birthday. He added all scheduled events for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, will take place as visitors to Thailand come here to enjoy the festivities and the cool weather that marks the year’s end.
According to Tourism Authority of Thailand ,TAT is lending support to the “Amazing Thailand Countdown 2014” in seven major tourist destinations – Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri (Pattaya), Songkhla (Hat Yai), Phuket, Khon Kaen and Chiang Rai from 25 December, 2013 to 1 January, 2014. Cultural shows, stage entertainment, concerts and firework displays are among the highlights that are sure to create memorable moments for the large crowds of travelers.
