• SKAL establishes chapter in China

    The first SKAL Club to be established in mainland China has been officially approved by the Chinese government authorities. SKAL International Beijing has been officially formed with both Chinese and non-Chinese nationals as individual members.

    It is the first, tourism, non-government organization with individual members to be officially sanctioned by the government of the People’s Republic of China. Enrique Quesada, President of SKAL International, said he looked forward to the formal inauguration of the new SKAL Club.

    “The Executive Committee of SKAL International was delighted to approve the first SKAL Club in mainland China and looks forward to welcoming many new SKAL members from China into the SKAL organization,” Mr. Quesada said.

    SKAL International was established in 1934 and is a professional organization of tourism leaders worldwide, promoting global tourism and friendship. SKAL International has approximately 18,000 members in 450 Clubs throughout 87 nations. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional, and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.

    The story of how SKAL International Beijing came to be established is a remarkable one. Bernhard Clever, Past President of SKAL International Los Angeles, was attending a PATA conference in Beijing last year and inadvertently left his camera in a taxi on his way to the conference. The taxi driver noticed the camera sometime after he had dropped Mr. Clever at the conference hotel and after dropping a passenger at the airport, went back to the hotel and arranged for the hotel staff to identify Mr. Clever on the hotel’s recorded video security system. By this time, Mr. Clever had returned to his own hotel but undeterred, the taxi driver established the hotel where Mr. Clever was staying and drove across town to personally return the camera.

    Touched by the taxi driver’s kindness, Mr. Clever approached Mr. Lu Yong, the Chairman of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, who was speaking at the conference and told him about the honesty and outstanding service of the Beijing taxi driver. This story was widely published in Beijing. Mr. Clever and Chairman Lu Yong developed a rapport that enabled a discussion to take place about the formation of SKAL International in Beijing.

    Tony Boyle, Immediate Past President of SKAL International, from Townsville, Australia, met with Chairman Lu Yong shortly after this event, and a series of meetings and discussions transpired resulting in the formal approval by the Chinese authorities to form a SKAL chapter in Beijing.

    Mr. Boyle said he was touched by the warmth of the people of Beijing during his visits to China during the past year and was excited about the establishment of the branch.

    “It’s really a great feeling to have finalized this complex negotiation, and I think it will have far-reaching consequences,” he said, “China is the world’s largest burgeoning tourism destination, and the establishment of a SKAL Club in mainland China will open enormous opportunities for the travel industry to do business in China, both inbound and outbound, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.       Bangkok has been ranked as the best city to visit in Asia for 2025 by Smart Travel Asia, a leading digital travel magazine, based on the opinions of hundreds of thousands of travellers and readers worldwide.

      The city received the highest votes in the “Best Holiday Destination in Asia” category, retaining its top position for the second consecutive year.

      Smart Travel Asia highlighted Bangkok’s strengths as its 24-hour vibrancy and diverse experiences, including food, culture, shopping, and the friendliness of its people, describing it as a “city full of energy and colour, day and night.”

      The city’s dominance stems from several compelling factors. Bangkok has emerged as a paradise for food enthusiasts, offering everything from legendary street food stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants and panoramic 360-degree rooftop bars. Its cultural and heritage sites, including the iconic Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho temples, remain major attractions to international tourists.

      Additionally, from luxury malls in the city centre to the Chatuchak weekend market, Bangkok caters to every type of shopper. Affordability and friendliness also play a key role, as Bangkok remains an accessible living cost destination where welcoming smiles continue to charm travellers.

      In the Smart Travel Asia 2025 rankings, Bali (Indonesia) and Tokyo (Japan) shared second place behind Bangkok, while Seoul (the Republic of Korea) and Luang Prabang (Laos) tied for fourth. Thailand further strengthened its tourism appeal with Chiang Mai placing third and Phuket sharing fifth place with Hong Kong (China).

      India resumes tourist visa for

      Chinese citizens after 5 years

      India announced  that it will open tourist visa applications to Chinese citizens from July 24, 2025. It was the first time in five years since the South Asian country suspended Chinese citizens’ tourist visa applications in February 2020.

      The Embassy of India in China announced via its Sina Weibo account  that, starting from July 24, 2025, Chinese citizens can apply for a tourist visa to visit India after completing an online application, scheduling an appointment, and personally submitting their passport and other required documents to three Indian visa application centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in South China’s Guangdong Province.

      Responding to the related inquiry, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said  that “we take note of this positive move. Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial. China will maintain communication and consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries.”

      Chinese experts said the latest move taken by the India marks a phased milestone in the easing of relations between the two countries, and creates favorable conditions for further strengthening bilateral people-to-people exchanges.
