• Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon

    Kathmandu: Phurba Tamang won the 10th edition of Tenzing-Hillary Mt.Everest Marathon at the Namche Bazaar .Tamang completed the journey of 42 km. distance in 3 hours 41 minutes and 31 seconds on May 29.Tamang, who works at Tara Air, had also won the race in 2009 and 2010.

    Ram Kumar Rajbhandari was a distant second in 3:54:51, while defending champion Sudip Kulung Rai came third in 4:00:54. The top three finishers bagged $1,000, $500 and $300 respectively.

    The 42.195km race — world’s highest altitude marathon that started from Gorak Shep, close to the Everest Base Camp( 5,363 meters)and ended at Namche Bazaar ( 3440meters) — is organised annually commemorating the International Everest Day that marks the first ascent of Mt Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953.

    James Scott of the USA came first in 5:22:07, while India’s Kelsang Dorjee finished second in 5:38:2 and Ryan Wolfarm was third in 5:48:07 in foreigner category. In women’s section, Tsring Palma of India claimed the title in 6:25:33, ahead of German Anette Walfarm (7:16:50) and American Jenifer Waldren (7:37:40).

    The Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon is part of annual celebrations marking the first conquest of the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) summit on 29 May 1953, by Edmund Hillary and his Tenzing Norgay.

    According to Bikram Pandey ,organizer of the event, 93 foreigners and 62 Nepali runners participated in Everest marathon this year.
