• Tourism: economic contributor amidst global uncertainties

    July 4, 2012

Bangdung : Amidst present global uncertainties, the tourism sector continues to contribute significantly towards economic growth and jobs creation, said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono – known as SBY for short – at the inauguration of the integrated Trans Studio Resort in Bandung recently.

Tourism contributes 4 percent directly to Indonesia’s GDP, said the President, while its indirect contribution reaches 9 percent of GDP. The tourism sector also contributes 7 percent to the total national workforce. This year in 2012, Indonesia aims to welcome 8 million tourists, who will contribute US$9 billion in foreign currency to the economy, while the 245 million domestic tourist trips made will spread Rp. 172 trillion across the country.

“Tourism in turn creates many activities outside hotels and restaurants, pushing rapid growth in the agricultural sector, including fresh foods and processed foods. Tourism also pushes growth in the creative industries, in souvenirs, fashion, arts and crafts, performances, and design,” President SBY said.

With the Apresence of the Trans Studio Bandung integrated resort, the President hopes that this can become a proud new icon for the city of Bandung, capital of West Java.

Owner of Trans Corporation, Chairul Tanjung, in his speech explained that the 10-hectare resort located in South Bandung comprises the Trans Studio indoor entertainment theme park, a mall, and convention and exhibition facilities, to enhance Bandung’s tourist attractions.

Saturday’s official opening of the Trans Studio Bandung integrated resort was witnessed by First Lady, Ani Yudhoyono, and Cabinet Ministers, including Mari Pangestu, Minister for Tourism and the Creative Economy, and Dede Yusuf, Deputy Governor of the province of West Java.

Tourism to Bandung has seen rapid growth, especially with the increase in international flights direct to the city. Jakartans also regularly flock to Bandung for shopping, food, and nature tours to Tangkuban Perahu crater and Ciater hot springs, in particular on weekends and school holidays.
