    UIAA elects new executive board, Peter Muir as new President

    Peter Muir from the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) is elected as the new President of the UIAA – International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation.

    Muir, elected during the federation’s first ever online General Assembly, becomes the UIAA’s 14th President and the second from Canada.

    Muir succeeds Frits Vrijlandt, Royal Dutch Climbing and Mountaineering Club (NKBV), Netherlands as UIAA President.

    According to UIAA, Muir will lead an Executive Board comprised of Lode Beckers (Belgium), Zoljargal Biznatch (Mongolia), Amit Chowdhury (India), Mahmood Hashemi (Iran), Martin Lascano (Argentina) and Francoise Jaquet of Switzerland.

    Similarly, Anne Arran (United Kingdom), Kul Bahadur Gurung (Nepal), Steve Long (United Kingdom), Jean Miczka (France), Greg Moseley (South Africa), Phil Powers (United States), and Stein Tronstad (Norway) were elected to the UIAA Management Committee by the General Assembly under continental and general representation category.

    The UIAA  has highly evaluated contributions of  Frits Vrijlandt and outgoing Executive Board members Helène Denis (FFCAM, France) and Yongfeng Wang (CMA, China) as well as Management Committee members Georges Elzière (FFCAM, France), Juan Garrigos i Toro (FEDME, Spain) and Reza Zarei (IMSCF, Iran) for their dedication to the UIAA.

    Legendary mountaineer Doug Scott was awarded Honorary Membership of the UIAA.

    The 2021 General Assembly is scheduled to take place in Trabzon, Turkey on 23 October.

    The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) was founded in 1932 and has a global presence on six continents representing 89 member associations and federations in 66 countries. The UIAA has been recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1995.
