    Foreign tourists exceed 4 million in Iran

    Tehran – Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization (CHTHO) Director Masoud Soltanifar says a “tsunami of foreign tourists” is currently hitting the country.

    When taking into account Shia pilgrims and visitors from neighboring countries, more than 4 million foreigners toured Iran from March 2013 to March 2014, each accounting for an estimated $1,200 of revenue, he said, according to the IRNA news agency.

    Foreign visitors to Iran are the most visible effect of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s drive to mend relations with the West, an influx that generated as much as $5 billion for the country’s sanction-hit economy over the past year. For the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, international hotel chains are now plotting a return, while European airlines are adding or restoring links with Tehran.

    Now, tour operators are hoping the thawing of political relations with the west following the election of Rouhani as president will give travelers the reassurance they need to return.

    Rouhani’s administration has announced plans to ease visa requirements to increase visitor numbers and increase annual income from tourism from $2 billion today to $10 billion.

    On May 17, CHTHO Director Soltanifar said the entry of European tourists to Iran has risen 240 percent between April 9 and May 10 compared to the same period last year.

    “Most of the 4- and 5-star hotels in the cities of Isfahan, Shiraz, Yazd, and Kashan have been fully reserved by European tourists for the next six months.”

    Between March 21 and April 20, the first month of the Iranian year, 4,594 foreign tour groups visited Iran, more than double the number that arrived in same period last year, Bloomberg quoted Morteza Rahmani-Movahed, the deputy director of the CHTHO, as saying.

    “The stability of the political situation will have an important impact on the economy,” Rahmani-Movahed said. “There has to be a relationship with the rest of the world.”

    Saudi Arabia’s Rotana Group plans to open five-star hotels in Tehran and the Shiite pilgrimage city of Mashhad.

    Austrian Airlines AG resumed direct flights to Tehran from Vienna in March. Iranian officials have been in talks with the Italian government and Alitalia SpA to increase the frequency on routes, the Fars News Agency reported on April 30, citing the deputy head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization.

    Representatives from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and several Arab countries, including Oman and Kuwait, have also visited Iran on “fact-finding” trips aimed at seeking future opportunities to invest in Iranian tourism, he said.

    Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has promised a rapprochement with the western powers over the country’s nuclear program. Among his first pledges after taking office in August last year, Rouhani said he planned to improve the quality of the tourism industry and draw more foreign travelers.

    Travel and tourism accounted for 6.3 percent of Iran’s $482 billion economy in 2012, according to an estimate by the World Economic Forum in a report last year.

    Most tourists arrive as part of package tours, according to officials. They visit during two peak seasons: April to early June, and September to October.

    Iran may be set to return to the top of “must-visit” lists for 2014, the Financial Times said in a report in January.

    Its attractions have never been in doubt — from ski resorts to beaches, stunning Islamic architecture, ancient archaeological sites, and superb food.

      Bangkok has been ranked as the best city to visit in Asia for 2025 by Smart Travel Asia, a leading digital travel magazine, based on the opinions of hundreds of thousands of travellers and readers worldwide.

      The city received the highest votes in the “Best Holiday Destination in Asia” category, retaining its top position for the second consecutive year.

      Smart Travel Asia highlighted Bangkok’s strengths as its 24-hour vibrancy and diverse experiences, including food, culture, shopping, and the friendliness of its people, describing it as a “city full of energy and colour, day and night.”

      The city’s dominance stems from several compelling factors. Bangkok has emerged as a paradise for food enthusiasts, offering everything from legendary street food stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants and panoramic 360-degree rooftop bars. Its cultural and heritage sites, including the iconic Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho temples, remain major attractions to international tourists.

      India resumes tourist visa for

      Chinese citizens after 5 years

      India announced  that it will open tourist visa applications to Chinese citizens from July 24, 2025. It was the first time in five years since the South Asian country suspended Chinese citizens’ tourist visa applications in February 2020.

      The Embassy of India in China announced via its Sina Weibo account  that, starting from July 24, 2025, Chinese citizens can apply for a tourist visa to visit India after completing an online application, scheduling an appointment, and personally submitting their passport and other required documents to three Indian visa application centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in South China’s Guangdong Province.

      Responding to the related inquiry, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said  that “we take note of this positive move. Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial. China will maintain communication and consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries.”

      Chinese experts said the latest move taken by the India marks a phased milestone in the easing of relations between the two countries, and creates favorable conditions for further strengthening bilateral people-to-people exchanges.
